Co-operatives in Fisheries
There are six co-operative sales organizations in fisheries. Protected by the Norwegian Raw Fish Act, the co-operative sales organizations have an exclusive right to take care of all first-hand marketing of fish and shellfish. The operational area of each organization is related either to geographic area and/or to the species for marketing.
The cooperative sales organizations are owned by the fishermen themselves. In addition to the marketing functions, the sales organizations also have important control functions as to the protection of marine resources.
The first hand marketing value of fish and shellfish is approximately 6 billion NOK.
90 % of all fish and shellfish is exported.
