Gjensidige Forsikring is a limited liability, mutual insurance company, with history and profile as a cooperative. The first local fire insurance cooperative was set up in 1689. In the 19th century a lot of local fire insurance companies were set up, creating the basis for the later Gjensidige Forsikring.
Gjensidige is one of the biggest Norwegian insurance companies, with approximately 966 000 customers/owners. Its market share in Norway is nearly 30 % in non-life insurance.
Gjensidige has about 3 800 employees in Norway.
The company has entered into new areas of activity, like pension and savings, banking and health care.
Gjensidige is also present both in the other Nordic countries, as well as in the Baltic countries.
